Breaking News!!: Virginia Beach, VA: Navy F/A-18D jet plane crashes into an apartment complex.
Authorities say no fatalities have been reported and all people have been accounted for a Navy F/A-18D jet plane crash in Virginia Beach, Virginia on Friday, April 6th, 2012.
At around 12:05pm ET, an Navy F/A-18D jet plane based at Naval Air Station (N.A.S.) Oceana crashed into the Mayfair Mews Apartment complex located at 1001 Fleming Circle just east of North Birdneck Road in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Authorities say 5 apartment buildings at the Mayfair Mews Apartment complex were damaged by fire.
Authorities also say no fatalities have been reported and 5 people on the ground were injured and were rushed to local hospitals where they were treated and later released.
Many people on the ground who seen and heard the crash rushed to help out people out of the apartment complex and even helping firefighters with moving fire hoses.
Authorities say 2 pilots were transported to a local hospital and were treated for minor injuries. Both pilots, a student and an instructor, are to be doing well according to hospital officials.
The pilots were forced to eject when their aircraft, one of the ejection seat landed in a backyard about 100 yards from the crash site.
As a result of F/A-18D jet plane crash, NAS Oceana shut down flight operations.
The U.S. Navy will conduct limited flight operations Saturday morning at NAS Oceana at around 9:00am ET to recover eight jets that diverted to NAS Chambers Field, Norfolk, Virginia because of Friday’s F/A-18D jet plane crash.
After these operations are completed, NAS Oceana will shut down for the remainder of the weekend until Monday morning when flight operations will begin again as scheduled.
Search crews were searching through the rubble of the Mayfair Mews Apartment complex to find anybody who may have been inside the apartment complex at the time of the F/A-18D jet plane crashed but people have been accounted for.
According to CBS affiliated WTKR Channel 3 in Norfolk, Virginia; “As of this morning, the three people missing after yesterday’s crash have been accounted for.”
The cause of the F/A-18D jet plane crash is under investigation.
