A high rise building known as the Plasco building collapsed in Tehran, Iran on Thursday, January 18th, 2017 during a fire.
Firefighters were battling the fire at the Plasco building for several hours before the 17 story high rise building collapsed.
A news reporter for Tasnim News was reporting live on the high rise building fire when the high rise building collapsed to the ground.
More than 200 firefighters were reportedly on the scene at the moment of the high rise building collapsed.
Rescue workers and sniffer dogs searched the rubble for several hours before Tehran Mayor Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf announced that 20 firefighters had died.
Earlier, Tehran Mayor Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf said that “no ordinary civilians” were believed to be missing, but witnesses told the Associated Press that they had seen some people slip through the barricades in an attempt to retrieve their personal possessions.
Completed in 1962, the Plasco building was once Tehran’s tallest and contained a shopping center and clothing workshops.
Buildings around the Plasco building were evacuated before the high rise building collapsed.
The cause of the fire and collapse of the Plasco building is reportedly under investigation.
