According to the City of Needles, William “Bill” Yoney worked as an electric lineman for C.P.U. and then C.P. National for many years before coming to the City of Needles in 1990 when operations and maintenance of the electric utility was absorbed as a city department.

William “Bill” Yoney served with distinction as the City of Needles’ line crew foreman and was either at work or on call 24/7/365 uninterrupted for years and was the City of Needles’ only qualified lineman that kept the lights on in Needles, California for decades.

The idea to rename the Bush Street Substation to Bill Yoney Substation came up back in January 2017 when a couple of the utility employees came up to Needles City Council Member Shawn Gudmundson with the idea.

Needles City Council Member Shawn Gudmundson brought the idea forward during a Needles City Council and Needles Public Utility Authority Meeting held on Tuesday, January 10th, 2017.

According to Needles City Council Member Shawn Gudmundson, William “Bill” Yoney passed away about a year ago and helped all of us in keeping the electricity.

The resolution changing the name of the Bush Street Substation to Bill Yoney Substation honors William “Bill” Yoney for his time, dedication and years of service to the community.

According to the Needles City Manager Rick Daniels, we’ll get a brass plaque to put on the substation to commemorate the dedication.

The new Bill Yoney Substation is part of a inter-tie power project upgrading the electrical infrastructure for new demand as well as to better supple power to the community in case of a power outage.

The new substation is located along the 800 block of Bush Street, near a flood control channel, in Needles, California.

Members of the Needles City Council approved an amendment to the Needles Public Utility Authority capital improvement plan during a Needles City Council Meeting held on Tuesday, November 8th, 2016.

The capital improvement plan included the rebuilding of an existing 12kV power line to a 69kV power line, with a 12kV power line underneath, and construct the line from the new substation on Bush Street to the Ice Plant Road substation.

The goal for the City of Needles is to start the Ice Plants Substation project immediately after completion of the new substation on Bush Street.
