Lake Havasu City, AZ: Deputies pull 3 victims to safety after their boat capsized.

According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, at approximately 5:48pm PT on Monday, April 3rd, 2017, Colorado River Boating Deputies responded to a capsized boat in the North Basin on Lake Havasu near Lake Havasu City, Arizona.

The owner/operator of the vessel, 66 year old Richard Ballou from Lake Havasu City, Arizona, was coming from the area of the North River when a monsoon came through the area.

Richard Ballou was attempting to get back to the launch ramp at Site 6 where he launched his watercraft earlier that day.

Richard Ballou stated while traveling through the North Basing he encountered 5-6 foot swells.

Richard Ballou was traveling approximately 15-20 mph when the bow of his watercraft nosed into a swell, and the watercraft submerged into the water and capsized within 2 minutes.

After the watercraft had capsized, all 3 involved were able to climb onto the keel of watercraft and out of the water.

Upon deputies arrival, they were able to pull the victims from the water to safety aboard their patrol vessel.

The 3 victims, Richard Ballou along with 66 year old Nicholas Azzollini and 63 year old Cheryl Azzollini from San Clemente, California, were transported to Site 6 where they were treated by medical for mild hypothermia.

The watercraft was later towed back to Site 6 by Sea Tow personnel.

The San Bernardino County Marine Enforcement Unit would like to remind boaters to check weather conditions before launching their vessel and always to wear life jackets.
