San Bernardino County, CA: National Boating Safety Week beginning and Marine Enforcement Unit will be out on the waterways.

According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, with the boating season upon us, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Marine Enforcement Unit is gearing up for an increase in watercraft traffic on the Colorado River and lakes throughout the county.

The patrols and enforcing safety on the waterway by law enforcement kicks off National Safe Boating Week which runs from Saturday, May 20th, 2017 to Friday, May 26th, 2017.

The Marine Enforcement Unit will be looking for boaters under the influence and ensuring all operators are boating safely.

All vessels are required to have basic safety equipment on board.

This includes a type 4 throwable floatation device immediately available to the operator, a functioning fire extinguisher, life jackets for everyone on the vessel, and a sound signaling device.

With the increase of watercraft on the waterways, there will also be increased enforcement stops.

The Marine Enforcement Unit would like to remind the public that any vessel app roaching a stationary law enforcement vessel displaying an illuminated blue light, shall immediately slow to a wakeless speed, to not inhibit or interfere with the law enforcement vessel.

Failure to do so is a violation of the Harbors and Navigation code and the operator may be cited for an infraction.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department recommends taking a boating safety class before you begin boating.
