An Amtrak passenger train carrying members of United States Congress has crashed into a garbage truck in Crozet, Virginia on Wednesday, January 31st, 2018.

First responders were dispatched to the crash area of Marymart Farm Road and Lanetown Road at 11:20am ET.
Authorities are saying that a person has died and at least 4 people, 2 passengers and 2 crew members, were taken to hospital with minor injuries.
The Amtrak passenger train was carrying congressional Republicans to a to their annual legislative retreat at the Greenbrier resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.
In a statement, United States Capitol Police Director Eva Malecki said, “Congressional officials, including the United States Capitol Police, are on the scene and are working closely with partner law enforcement agencies in response to the incident.”
From the White House, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said, “The president has been fully briefed on the situation in Virginia and is receiving regular updates. There is one confirmed fatality and one serious injury. There are no serious injuries among members of Congress or their staff.”
In a statement, Amtrak said, “There are no reported injuries to passengers or crew members. Local law enforcement is investigating the incident and crews are inspecting equipment for damage. The train originated in Washington, D.C. Updates will be provided as new information becomes available.”
