News Alert!!: California: New state law signed by California Governor bars full service restaurants from automatically handing out plastic straws.

People who enjoyed straws with their drinks at their favorite California restaurants will have to ask to have a straw under a new state law that was signed by California Governor Jerry Brown on Thursday, September 20th, 2018.

The new law bars full service restaurants from automatically giving out single-use plastic straws.

The new law will take affect in 2019 and restaurants in California that don’t comply will get 2 warnings before being fined up to $300.00 per year.

The law will apply only to full service restaurants, not fast food establishments, and doesn’t ban plastic straws outright like some cities have.

Democratic lawmakers in California who support the new law call it a small step toward reducing ocean pollution.

Those opposing the new law say thus is government overreach that won’t significantly improve the environment.
