Breaking News!!: Needles, CA: Death investigation into a body floating along the Colorado River near Jack Smith Memorial Park.

According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, at approximately 4:24pm PT on Sunday, November 5th, 2017, deputies from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Colorado River Station were dispatched to a body floating in the Colorado River just south of Jack Smith Memorial Park in needles, California.

A deputy with the Marine Enforcement Unit launched a patrol boat and made contact with the reporting party, who had stayed along side the body until the deputy arrived on scene.

The deceased was recovered from the river and transported to Jack Smith Memorial Park were he was released to the coroner.

The coroner was able to identify the male subject as 46 year old Chad Russell Elkins from Fort Mohave, Arizona with the assistance of the Mohave County Sheriff’s Department.

The cause of death is currently under investigation.

ZachNews was alerted late Sunday evening about something spotted along the Colorado River and fire department and rescue boat activity Jack Smith Memorial Park thanks to ZachNews fans Ronna Johnson and Terry Powell from Needles, California.

Ronna Johnson telling ZachNews by email, “My family and I went out on the boat for the first time today. While we were out boat my son seen something floating at about 4:30. I called 911 it was a dead body.”

Terry Powell telling ZachNews by email, “My mom and sister live in the house looking into Jack Smith Park. They noticed rescue boat docked, picked up 2 people and left to go out to river, then yellow + white ambulance or ME examr truck pulled up along with fire captain truck or smaller fire truck. Flashing lights but no sirens. Rescue boat returned but by then dark and they couldn’t tell what was happening.”

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department is a dead body that was found near River Toys Boat and R.V. Storage, located on the 300 block of Balboa Place, in Needles, California at 10:10am PT on Friday, June 2nd, 2017.

 

A news tips of police activity and crime tape seen near the River Toys Boat and R.V. Storage as well as an incident call posted on the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Media Summary page (NE171530007 NER1700578 DB (Dead Body)) had ZachNews contacting the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department for more information.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department only confirms to ZachNews that a dead body was discovered at the location and a death investigation was launched

ZachNews has learned that the person who was found dead is being identified as Steve Raskett, the on-site manager at River Toys Boat and R.V. Storage.

In a posting on the River Daves Place website to their customers, River Toys Boat and R.V. Storage said, “To our Valued Customers: It is with deep sadness that we are notifying you of the passing of Steve Raskett, the on-site manager at River Toys Boat and RV Storage, on Friday, June 2, 2017. Steve?s presence at River Toys will certainly be missed by all who knew him. In deference to Steve?s privacy and for that of his family and friends the details of his passing will not be made public.”

The posting from River Toys Boat and R.V. Storage continues saying, “The owners have engaged the services of Jimmy Murray to fill in for the next several days until the new on-site manager, Ricardo Ortiz, can make arrangements to settle in at the boat storage. Authorities are investigating a dead body found by a park employee at Kenyon Park in Rancho Cucamonga, California at 6:28am PT on Thursday, September 17th, 2015.

According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, at 6:28am PT on Thursday, September 17th, 2015, deputies responded to Kenyon Park reference a report of an unresponsive male in the park.

Deputies and medical personnel arrived and pronounced the man dead at the scene.

San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Specialized Investigations Division Homicide Detail responded to the scene and are conducting the investigation.

The investigation is ongoing and an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

At this moment, there is no further details are available.

Updates will be provided from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department as information becomes available.

ZachNews has talked with a local resident who spoke to the man prior to him being found dead behind the El Garces Train Depot in Downtown Needles, California on Monday, July 6th, 2015.

Sam Johnson, resident of Needles, California, tells ZachNews that the man introduce himself as “Curtis” to him and was waiting for for money or a ticket to take the Amtrak to go to Little Rock, Arkansas on the Friday, July 17th, 2015.

Sam Johnson also tells ZachNews that and “Curtis” was sleeping out near the new fountain area behind the El Garces Train Depot.

ZachNews went over the the area where the man was sleeping at and found a blanket, food, water, glass bottles for alcohol, and pair of clothes that the man was wearing that afternoon when he was found dead.

In the area where the body of the man was found, the yellow tarp remains there near a palm tree and a sign for the Amtrak passenger train near the passenger platform.

On Tuesday, July 7th, 2015, ZachNews got a message from San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Public Information Office’s Cindy Bachman regarding the man found dead behind the El Garces Train Depot.

According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Public Information Office’s Cindy Bachman, “On Monday, July 6, 2015 at 7:03 p.m. deputies were called to the location, along with medical aid and found an adult male deceased. The call indicates no sign of foul play. A Coroner Investigator responded and the Coroner will determine the cause of death.”

At this moment, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department hasn’t release the name of this man, the cause of death, or where he was from.

The area behind the El Garces Train Depot is a know place to sleep at well covered out of the heat or rain if you’re homeless or is a place where people can drink without law enforcement bothering them.

ZachNews Photojournalist Zachary A. Lopez arrived to the west side parking lot of the El Garces Train Depot where at least 2 San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department vehicles and a San Bernardino County Fire Department engine was there.

At least 2 San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Deputies and 3 San Bernardino County Fire Department Firefighters where seen later standing around the body which was covered up with a yellow tarp and when partly uncovered, the person was wearing light blue jeans and possibly no shirt.

The west side platform area behind the El Garces Train Depot as well as part of the parking lot near H Street and Front Street was closed as the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department wait for the uncovered body to be picked up and move from the area.

ZachNews went back to the scene later that evening to get any more information and as I went up to a asked the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Deputy who was there, I notice that the body was no longer covered with the yellow tarp.

ZachNews asked the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Deputy if there was any more information and why was the body uncovered, but the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Deputy couldn’t say nothing and asked the me to clear the area.

At around 9:35pm PT on Monday, July 6th, 2015, a white van with the Dimond and Sons Needles Mortuary logo appeared from the area where the dead body was found and drove away from the El Garces Train Depot.

A dead body has been found in front of the Frontier Communications Office located at 911 West Broadway in Downtown Needles, California on Sunday, October 28th, 2012.

A coroner van is in route to the location to pick up the dead body.
