** Video from the Today Show: **

The manager of the Ghost Ship, 46 year old Derick Ion Almena, was interviewed Tuesday morning on the Today Show, but emotions set in during the interview of what happened and the many people who died inside his warehouse.

During the emotional interview, Derick Ion Almena defended his role as landlord for the building which was used as a residential artist community.

I’m only here to say one thing: I’m incredibly sorry and that everything that I did was to make this a stronger and more beautiful community and to bring people together. People didn’t walk through those doors because it was a horrible place. People didn’t seek us out to perform and express themselves because it was a horrible place,” Derick Ion Almena told the Today Show.

Derick Ion Almena told the Today Show that he opened the warehouse to artists that didn’t have space elsewhere and for people who “can’t pay your rent because your dream is bigger than your pocketbook.”

When the needed for housing, the need for people to be able to sit down and be warm and make food and take a shower, take a bath and go to bed. So we created something together. This stopped being me. This stopped being about me 3 years ago,” Derick Ion Almena told the Today Show.

Derick Ion Almena told the Today Show that when he signed the lease for the building.

I signed a a lease and I got a building that was to city standards supposedly. I was lowered into something that I had to constantly….,” Derick Ion Almena told the Today Show.

A tech sales worker and jewelry maker who lived there for 4 to 5 months about 2 years ago at the converted warehouse dubbed the “Ghost Ship” spoke to NBC affiliate KNTV Channel 11.

The former tenant, 58 year old Shelley Mack said she found the rental in an ad on Facebook, paid about $700 a month in rent, along with a security deposit of the same amount and a one-time contribution of about $700 to a fund meant to go toward improvements, but none were ever made.

Shelley Mack said that the warehouse was often freezing cold in the building, water and power were sometimes stolen from neighbors, who would get angry and shut them off, and once, a generator blew up, and residents quickly doused the flames.

Shelley Mack told NBC affiliate KNTV Channel 11 that she didn’t know the ramshackle dwelling was illegal until after she moved in and she was instructed to tell visitors it was a 24-hour workspace for artists.

When inspectors or other outsiders came to visit, Shelley Mack said she and other residents scurried to hide clothes, bedding and other evidence anyone was living there.

It’s a good example of people taking advantage of people because they had no other options. People make businesses off scamming people online when they’re looking for a place,” Shelley Mack told NBC affiliate KNTV Channel 11.

The warehouse was crammed with rugs, old sofas and a garage-sale-like collection of pianos, paintings, turntables, statues and other items that quickly fed the flames.

“All kinds of electrical cords running through there illegally. Massive extension cords. Heavy musical equipment. That place was just a death trap. I didn’t think it was going to last this long before it went up or somebody shut it down,” Shelley Mack told NBC affiliate KNTV Channel 11.

Shelley Mack then told NBC affiliate KNTV Channel 11 that one doorway was blocked, because it led to the property of a neighbor who’d been in a dispute with the operators, whom she and other former tenants and friends identified as 46 year old Derick Ion Almena and his wife, 40 year old Micah Allison.

They lure you in with all these promises about what they’re going to do with your deposit and your rent. They don’t do any of it. They just party with it,” Shelley Mack told NBC affiliate KNTV Channel 11.

When asked about those claims during the Today Show interview, Derick Ion Almena said, “I don’t want to talk – I don’t want to talk about it, I don’t want to talk about me. I don’t want to talk about profiting. This is profit? The loss of mass life? Like I’m a father. I lay my three children down there every night. Profit, this is not profit – this is lost, this is a mass grave.”

When asked for the families of the victims, Derick Ion Almena said, “I’m only here to say – I’m only here to say one thing, that I’m incredibly sorry and that everything I did was to make this a stronger, beautiful community and to bring people together. People didn’t walk through those doors because it was a horrible place. People didn’t seek us out to preform and to express themselves because it was a horrible place.  I’m 47 years old, I’m the father of this space, and on the night of the fire – did I know there was going to be a fire? Did I move my children from the space? and get a hotel – because I wanted to avoid this? because I wanted to cast blame on other people? No, because I wanted to get a good night sleep with my children and I wanted to let the young people do what they needed to do.”

Addressing the questions the 2 host of the Today Show are asking, Derick Ion Almena said, “I am not going to answer any of these questions in the way you are presenting them. I didn’t do anything ever in my life that would leave me up to this moment. I’m an honorable man, I’m a proud man – No I’m not going to answer these questions on this level. I’d rather get on the floor and be trampled by the parents. I’d rather let them tear at my flesh than answer these ridiculous questions. I’m so sorry, I’m incredibly sorry, what do you want me to say – I am not going to answer these questions. I am just going to say that I’m sorry.”

As Today Show host Matt Lauer was ending the interview and thanking him for his time, Derick Ion Almena said, “If you have to hold my soul accountable – if you have to hold my soul accountable for believing in something. And loitering in other artistes and other beautiful people – that also believed with me, and for 3 years we built something – everyday, we improved everything.

After the emotional interview, Derick Ion Almena avoided questions from the many news media outlets as he was escorted away to a vehicle.

Since the deadly warehouse fire, many in the artist’s community are now focusing their anger at Derick Ion Almena, the founder of the collective who escaped the fire.

City of Oakland Officials said that the Ghost Ship, the warehouse that Derick Ion Almena told several news media outlets people lived inside, was not permitted as a residential building, but there are many of similar warehouses across Oakland, California and San Francisco, California.

Meanwhile, as the investigation continues into this deadly warehouse fire, many in the artist’s community are now focusing their anger at 46 year old Derick Ion Almena, the founder of the collective who escaped the fire.

Derick Ion Almena’s wife and children were reportedly at a hotel when the fire broke out.

Derick Ion Almena, who friends knew as Derick Ion, was convicted in January of receiving stolen property, specifically an Airstream trailer from his landlord in January 2015, court records show.

Derick Ion Almena spent 2 days in jail then, plead no contest to a misdemeanor, and is currently on probation until 2019.

TMZ is reporting that law enforcement sources say Derick Ion Almena was pulled over in Los Angeles County, California for having expired tags in March 2015, and while searching his car cops discovered he had 2 stolen license plates from vehicles registered in Oakland, California.

Derick Ion Almena was arrested and booked for petty theft, but was never charged though — the District Attorney declined to prosecute.

Derick Ion Almena survived the fire and posted to Facebook after hearing that the converted warehouse he managed was the site of a deadly fire.

The Facebook post, which has since been deleted, got a lot of attention because of its insensitivity to what was already known to be a fatal scene.

Derick Ion Almena’s Facebook post read, “Confirmed. Everything I worked so hard for is gone. Blessed that my children and Micah were at a hotel safe and sound … it’s as if I have awoken from a dream filled with opulence and hope … to be standing now in poverty of self worth.”

His Facebook posting prompted more than 2,000 comments, and many of them were critical of Almena’s message.

People who commented to Derick Ion Almena’s facebook posting said he showed more concern for his material possessions than the people who were killed in the blaze.

NBC News received a statement from Derick Ion Almena which read, “In my previous Facebook post, I had no idea there was a loss of life. This tragic event consumes me every moment. My heart is broken. My heartfelt condolences to the family and friends who have suffered the loss of loved ones.”
