News Alert!!: Needles, CA: Needles City Council to discuss and appoint members for a task force to investigate the restoring of a school resource officer.

Members of the Needles City Council are planning to discuss and appoint at least 2 members for a task force to investigate the restoring of a school resource officer during a Needles City Council and Needles Public Utility Authority Meeting on Tuesday, February 27th, 2018 inside the Needles City Council Chambers in Needles, California.

The restoring of a School Resource Officer (S.R.O.) was requested to be place on the agenda by Needles Vice Mayor Jeff Williams and was in wake of the deadly shooting at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida on Wednesday, February 14th, 2018 that killed 17 people and injured 14 people.

As reported on ZachNews 2 weeks ago, Needles Vice Mayor Jeff Williams is working with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, the Needles Unified School District, and San Bernardino County Supervisor to “restore our school resource officer position.”

Currently, there is no school resource officer serving for the schools in the Needles Unified School District, and Needles City Manager Rick Daniels told ZachNews that the school district did not have enough money to pay for school resource officer.

According to the City of Needles, until 2011, a sworn deputy was assigned to the school district campuses to assist with on site and youth oriented law enforcement issues, such as violence incidents, truancy, drug prevention programs, etc.

The School Resource Officer (S.R.O.) was jointly funded by the Needles Unified School District (N.U.S.D.), San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, San Bernardino County Supervisor, and the City of Needles.

The program was discontinued due to lack of funding availability by one or more of the funding partners.

The Needles Unified School District (N.U.S.D.) requested the reestablishment of an School Resource Officer (S.R.O.) during the 2016-2017 San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Contract negotiations.

At that time, it was estimated a School Resource Officer (S.R.O.) would cost $165,000.

The approved the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Contract however requested an option for providing a School Resource Officer (S.R.O.) upon execution of a funding agreement between the City of Needles and the Needles Unified School District (N.U.S.D.).

Captain Tarangle informed staff that a School Resource Officer (S.R.O.) would free up city patrol deputies to focus on patrolling the city.

During school hours there is typically one deputy on duty and calls for service at the school draw resources away from other patrol needs.

A Council Task Force could convene a meeting of the former funding parties to investigate the School Resource Officer (S.R.O.) Program value and funding strategies to re-establish the program.

The City of Needles said that the fiscal impact is minimal staff time.

The recommendation in front of members of the Needles City Council is for the City of Needles Mayor appoint 2 a person council task force to organize a convening of the Needles Unified School District (N.U.S.D.), San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, and the San Bernardino County Supervisor’s Office to investigate reestablishing a School Resource Officer (S.R.O.) for the school campuses in Needles, California and discuss other off campus youth law enforcement issues; authorize the City Manager to provide adequate staff support; and report back to the Needles City Council in 60 days.

As families, friends, and community come together to remember the innocent victims of the deadly school shooting, the suspected shooter Nikolas Cruz was inside a crowded Broward County Courtroom on Monday for a status hearing as attorneys concerning the rules going forward of how documents would be sealed.

The 19 year old suspected shooter sat quietly for most of the 20 minutes he was inside, only saying a few words to his court appointed lawyers.

Circuit Judge Elizabeth Scherer said she was in favor of openness whenever possible.

A second hearing was scheduled for later Monday over the possible release of records from the Department of Children and Families.

The evidence against suspected shooter Nikolas Cruz is so overwhelming, the only question left for the courts if he is convicted is whether he will be sentenced to death or spend the rest of his life in prison.

The fate of suspected shooter Nikolas Cruz, who’s facing 17 counts of first-degree murder in the deadly shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last week, will depend on his mental state and the wishes of the victims’ families, which have a say in how the prosecution proceeds.

Broward County Public Defender Howard Finkelstein, whose office is representing Nikolas Cruz, said there were so many warning signs that Nikolas Cruz was mentally unstable and potentially violent that the death penalty might be going too far, and Nikolas Cruz would likely plead guilty if prosecutors opt not to seek the death penalty.

The Broward County Sheriff’s Office said Nikolas Cruz confessed, and they have his AR-15 semi-automatic rifle, ammunition clips and video from the school.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation also said it had gotten a call from someone close to Nikolas Cruz who expressed concern that he had “a desire to kill people” and “the potential” to conduct a school shooting.

On Sunday, the Broward County Sheriff’s Office visited 15 year old Anthony Borges, who’s recovering in the hospital after he was shot 5 times during the deadly shooting as he slammed the door of a classroom shut, protecting 20 of his classmates.

The Broward County Sheriff’s Office  said it was an honored to visit Anthony Borges and wanted the public to know in a tweet to, “please join us in praying for the swift recovery of Anthony and all others from.”

** As of 1:22pm PT on Friday, February 16th, 2018: **

During a news conference moments ago, Broward County Sheriff’s Office Scott Israel said that the school resource officer never incounter the suspect on the day of the deadly shooting.

Broward County Sheriff’s Office Scott Israel addressed rumors that were circling online, that the suspect was found with a gas mask and gas grenades.

Broward County Sheriff’s Office Scott Israel said that there were “no gas mask and gas grenades” found on the suspect.

The Broward County Sheriff’s Office is saying that at lease 20 calls for services regarding Nikolas Cruz were made to authorities.

Broward County Sheriff’s Office Scott Israel also said that the son of a deputy who was injured has been release from the hospital today.

Meanwhile, Broward Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie is telling the news media that the 3 story freshman school building, Building 12, where the deadly shooting occurred will be torn down.

Parents and students have resoundingly told me they can’t go back into that building regardless of what we do. The other piece I heard is that that building will be used as evidence in any type of legal process that goes forward, so we won’t be able to access the building for a while anyway,” said Broward Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie.

Broward Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie plans to request funding from Tallahassee to construct a new building somewhere else on the campus, and a memorial put in its place.

Florida legislators reportedly support Broward Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie’s plan and say they will provide the resources to make it happen.

United States of America President Donald Trump said he will come to Florida on Friday, a trip he had scheduled to his home in Palm Beach, Florida prior to the deadly shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

United States of America President Donald Trump would visit Parkland, Florida and will meet with those involved in dealing with the shooting.

I will be leaving for Florida today to meet with some of the bravest people on earth — but people whose lives have been totally shattered. Am also working with Congress on many fronts,” tweeted United States of America President Donald Trump.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation received a tip last month that accused suspect Nikolas Cruz had a “desire to kill” and access to guns and could be plotting an attack, but agents failed to investigate.

A person who was close to Nikolas Cruz called the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s tip line on Friday, January 5th, 2018 and provided information about Nikolas Cruz’s weapons and his erratic behavior, including his disturbing social media posts.

The caller was concerned that Nikolas Cruz could attack a school.

In a statement, the Federal Bureau of Investigation acknowledged that the tip should have been shared with the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Miami Office and investigated, but it wasn’t.

The startling admission from the Federal Bureau of Investigation come days after the Federal Bureau of Investigation was already facing criticism for its treatment of a tip about a YouTube comment posted last year.

The comment posted by a “Nikolas Cruz” said, “Im going to be a professional school shooter.”

The Federal Bureau of Investigation was also notified about a comment on a YouTube video posted by a “Nikolas Cruz” last year.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation investigated the comment, but did not determine who made it.

United States Attorney General Jeff Session ordered a review on what happened in this case and the handling of the Federal Bureau of Investigation failed to follow up on those tips.

People are angry at the Federal Bureau of Investigation for dropping the ball in this case, failing to preventing another deadly shooting in America.

Florida Governor Rick Scott is calling for Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Christopher Wray to resign in wake of what happen in this case.

Seventeen innocent people are dead and acknowledging a mistake isn’t going to cut it. An apology will never bring these 17 Floridians back to life or comfort the families who are in pain,” said Florida Governor Rick Scott.

In a statement, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said, “On January 5, 2018, a person close to Nikolas Cruz contacted the FBI’s Public Access Line (PAL) tipline to report concerns about him. The caller provided information about Cruz’s gun ownership, desire to kill people, erratic behavior, and disturbing social media posts, as well as the potential of him conducting a school shooting. Under established protocols, the information provided by the caller should have been assessed as a potential threat to life. The information then should have been forwarded to the FBI Miami Field Office, where appropriate investigative steps would have been taken. We have determined that these protocols were not followed for the information received by the PAL on January 5. The information was not provided to the Miami Field Office, and no further investigation was conducted at that time.”

In another statement, Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Christopher Wray said, “We are still investigating the facts. I am committed to getting to the bottom of what happened in this particular matter, as well as reviewing our processes for responding to information that we receive from the public. It’s up to all Americans to be vigilant, and when members of the public contact us with concerns, we must act properly and quickly. “We have spoken with victims and families, and deeply regret the additional pain this causes all those affected by this horrific tragedy. All of the men and women of the FBI are dedicated to keeping the American people safe, and are relentlessly committed to improving all that we do and how we do it.”

Meanwhile, the first funerals of the victims in the deadly school shooting began Friday.

About 400 people, including family, friends and the community, attended 14 year old Alyssa Alhadeff’s funeral and burial at Star of David Memorial Gardens Cemetery and Funeral Chapel in North Lauderdale.

Alyssa Alhadeff is being described by family and friends as a go-getter and a great soccer player.

Another funeral is scheduled on Friday for 18 year old Meadow Pollack.

The suspect in a deadly school shooting has been charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder.

Authorities say that Nikolas Cruz reportedly left a comment on a YouTube video last year stating ‘I’m going to be a professional school shooter‘.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation was warned in September about a possible school shooting threat from a YouTube user with the same name as the suspect.

The comment posted on YouTube has since been taken down.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation special agent in charge of the Miami division, Robert Lasky, confirmed on Thursday that the bureau received a tip last year about the YouTube comment.

No other information was included with that comment which would indicate a time, location or the true identity of the person who made the comment. The FBI conducted database reviews, checks but was unable to further identify the person who actually made the comment,” said Robert Lasky.
