Breaking News!!: Downtown Needles, CA: Firefighters responded to the Jack In The Box fast food restaurant to reports of smoke and electrical burning smell.

Firefighters from San Bernardino County Fire Department Station 32 responded to reports of smoke and electrical burning smell inside the Jack In The Box fast food restaurant, located on the 200 block of J Street, in Downtown Needles, California.

The incident occurred before 5:50am PT on Sunday, February 18th, 2018.

Firefighters from San Bernardino County Fire Department Station 32 arrived to the Jack In The Box fast food restaurant and Mohave Valley Fire Department was called to assist on a “structure fire at the Jack In The Box”.

ZachNews Photojournalist Zachary A. Lopez arrived to the Jack In The Box fast food restaurant to find firefighters inside the dining area and walking to the kitchen area.

No visible smoke or flames on the outside the Jack In The Box fast food restaurant.

Employees with Jack In The Box fast food restaurant tell ZachNews that there was a smell of something electrical burning and smoke coming from a vent area on the ceiling area of the dining area.

After checking out the Jack In The Box fast food restaurant, firefighters from San Bernardino County Fire Department Station 32 left the scene and assistance from Mohave Valley Fire Department was called off.

Employees at the Jack In The Box fast food restaurant also tell ZachNews that they are airing out the dining area and that they are open for business.

At least 3 patrol vehicles from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department at the scene blocking both sides of the North K Street Underpass.

No reports of injuries.

Reminder to all oversize vehicles and semi trucks, the North K Street Underpass has a 8 ft. clearance, but may be a bit lower then that under the railroad bridge.

All oversize vehicles and semi trucks are told to use Needles Highway to West Broadway as a better route instead of the North K Street Underpass.

No details release from authorities on injuries, but a witness tells ZachNews that there were injuries.

Tow truck crews from A Tow Truck are on scene clearing the traffic accidents.

Cause of the traffic accident is under investigation.

During public appearance regarding this agenda item, the applicant with Deco Food Service, David Deatley (Cream Shirt) and Derek Deatley (Blue Shirt), told members of the Needles City Council and the public that, “We are not relocating our business.”

This comes after concerns from the community of Deco Food Service moving their business out of Needles, California for good.

Some members of the Needles City Council are worry about existing businesses in the community selling out for medical marijuana cultivation facilities and moving their businesses to another city or to Arizona.

But the applicant with Deco Food Service said that their business has been in this community for a long time and that, “We are committed in staying in Needles” and keeping their food distribution business in Needles, California, “makes the most sense to us.”

During pass meetings which were broadcast live at ZachNews on Facebook, Deco Food Service has stated that they had no intent on leaving this community for good, and would like to grow their food distribution business in Needles, California, but the current location, on Front Street near D Street in Downtown Needles, California, restraints them from expanding their business.

The Deco food service warehouse is surrounded by 2 streets to the north and east, an alleyway to the south, and another building, Eagles Lodge #2599, to the west.

Along with no room to grow, Deco Food Service said that the current location has cracked sidewalks and driveway along Front Street that are in need of being renew.


This medical marijuana cultivation facility project will required applicants to process an encroachment permit with the City of Needles to allow for minimizing the existing sidewalk width along D Street from 5 feet to 3 feet and install landscaping along the sidewalk in front of Front Street to consist of circular/square metal tree grates for 3 trees.

The requirements came up and was unanimously voted on during public hearing at the Needles Planning Commission Meeting held on Wednesday, December 13th, 2017.

Deco Food Service states that they are working, including with the City of Needles, on finding a new location in Needles, California their food distribution business, including a site that they like along San Clemente Street.

The applicant with Deco Food Service also has stated that until a new location is found in Needles, California, they will be working out of a temporary warehouse in Fort Mohave, Arizona, but their sales and administration office, located along the 700 block of West Broadway, will remain inside that building at that location. 

Another concern that has been raised at pass meetings regarding this medical marijuana cultivation facility project was over 3 “separation issues”, occupies in the Downtown Needles, California area that are near by or down the street from the project site.

Currently, the project site is prohibited from functioning as a medical marijuana facility since it is within 1,000 ft. of the community school run by the Needles Unified School District, currently located on the corner of Front Street and F Street near Santa Fe Park.

The applicant with Deco Food Service is working with Needles Unified School District in relocating the school to a different location and is purchasing the old Desert Communities Federal Credit Union on Third Street near D Street from the Needles Elks Lodge.


A letter to the City of Needles from the Needles Unified School District, dated Wednesday, November 22nd, 2017, provides a relocation date of no later than Wednesday, February 28th, 2018.

Currently, the project site is also within 1,000 ft of a Girl Scout facility, which is located at 111 C Street.


The applicant with Deco Food Service provided a letter to the City of Needles from the President and C.E.O. of the “Girl Scouts of San Gorgonio’, dated Thursday, November 30th, 2017, indicating that they have received an offer for the purchase of the property, which will be considered by the organization at the Board of Directors Meeting in February 2018.

Currently, the project site is also 200 ft of a church, Needles Community United Methodist Fellowship, located at 111 D Street.


The applicant with Deco Food Service provided a letter to the City of Needles from Pastor, dated Thursday, November 30th, 2017, indicating the church will be vacating the site “in the very near future’.

The applicant with Deco Food Service said that they are working with Needles Community United Methodist Fellowship on finding another new location in the community.

As stated in documents from the City of Needles, the project has been conditioned so that no activity related to medical marijuana can occur at the proposed site until such time as the separation issues identified above are resolved.

Another concern that has been raised at pass meetings regarding this medical marijuana cultivation facility project has to do with the location of the project being in area the community wants to see designated as a downtown district.

Talks during pass meetings stated the need of seeing more retail businesses and restaurants in this area instead of medical marijuana cultivation facilities, but the issue has raised a debate over what is designated as downtown to the City of Needles.

City of Needles continues to discuss what is designated as being downtown, including from what street to what street makes this area be downtown, and getting a general plan for the City of Needles started.

Downtown Needles, CA: Community rejoices for the Needles Holiday Fun Fair 2017.

The holiday season was kicked off with lots of fun and community togetherness during the Needles Holiday Fun Fair 2017 held on Saturday, December 2nd, 2017 in Downtown Needles, California.

The Needles Holiday Fun Fair 2017, formerly the Ol Santa Nick on Route 66, brought the popular community event back to life from an uncertain future thanks to a team effort by the Desert Communities Federal Credit Union, the Women’s Club of Needles, and the City of Needles.

The new event team brought the popular community event back to what it was years ago, placing the event right on the street of West Broadway so that nobody will missing the event and made sure that the Memorial Christmas Tree Lighting was brought back apart of the event.

ZachNews was broadcasting live on Facebook the Needles Holiday Fun Fair 2017 and gave a walking tour of all of the fun that awaited the community.

Vendors with a variety of different clothes, Christmas theme items, and homemade gifts were set up along West Broadway for a open street market experiences.

People were seen checking out all of the wonderful items being sold as well as buying that last minute Christmas gift for their family or friends.

The California Highway Patrol in Needles, California had their booth set up and were giving out California Highway Patrol lanyard and stickers to the kids.

Next to the California Highway Patrol booth was their patrol vehicle where kids got to go inside and turn on the lights of the patrol vehicle.

On the west side of the Desert Communities Federal Credit Union, kids were seen having fun playing games in the kids game area.

Inside the Desert Communities Federal Credit Union off West Broadway, people were welcomed in to Santa Claus’ Workshop where kids visited with Santa Claus and told him what they want for Christmas.

From tasty chili dogs, chili, and soda to sweet and delicious treats, the Santa Claus’ Workshop had lunch and dessert waiting for you to enjoy.

The Woman’s Club of Needles were selling out many of their sweet and delicious treats during the event, including pies to cookies.

Kids got to do some holiday theme arts and crafting during the event with the help of Santa’s elves.

Parents and guardians were seen lined up to sign up their children for new toys for the holiday season during the Needles’ Spark of Love Toy Drive 2017’s One Day Registration.

The children also got to find the right gift for their parents and guardians in a Santa’s kid shop where kids can buy gifts for under a dollar and have their gifts wrapped for them with the help of Santa’s elves.

As part of the Needles Holiday Fun Fair 2017 event, the 7th Annual Route 66 Pee Wee Derby was held along West Broadway put on by the Needles Recreation Center.

ZachNews was broadcasting live on Facebook all of the joy and racing fun the kids and the community were having during the 7th Annual Route 66 Pee Wee Derby.

The winners of the 7th Annual Route 66 Pee Wee Derby were announced to the community and broadcast live at ZachNews on Facebook.

Later, the community gather for a wonderful performance by the Needles Recreation Center’s Dance Trax 51 along West Broadway.

ZachNews was broadcasting live on Facebook the performance by the Needles Recreation Center’s Dance Trax 51.

The kids preformed in front of the community a variety of songs and dances that warmed the crowd up with lots of love and joy.

As the evening progress, preparations were underway to set up ornaments and lights for the Memorial Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony.

ZachNews and Drew’s News teamed up to broadcast live the Memorial Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony.

The Memorial Christmas Tree were decorated with ornaments from the community, including an ornament City of Needles Mayer Edward T. Paget placed on the Memorial Christmas Tree remembering the victims of the September 11 terror attack.

The lights on the Memorial Christmas Tree were set by volunteers, including Needles City Council Member Shawn Gudmundson who were seen checking and rechecking the lights and replacing lights on the Memorial Christmas Tree.

People enjoyed the decorated Memorial Christmas Tree, which is located near the intersection of West Broadway and G Street and will be lighted up through the Christmas and holiday season.

Anybody can place an ornament on the Memorial Christmas Tree, but please make sure that your ornament is fasten tight on the branch so that the winds don’t blow your ornament away.

After the Memorial Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, people began purchasing delicious hot chocolate being sold by wonderful kids with the California School Employees Association and lined along West Broadway for the Needles Holiday Fun Fair 2017’s Lighted Parade.

Overall, the Needles Holiday Fun Fair 2017 was well attended and well enjoyed, people glad that the event is back along West Broadway like in the pass, enjoyed the different activities and entertainment including the Route 66 Pee Wee Derby and Needles Recreation Center’s Dance Trax 51, and the return of the Memorial Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony.

What’s next for the organizers of the Needles Holiday Fun Fair 2017 is to find out what went right or wrong during the event, what changes or improvements are needed, and suggestions on how to make next year’s event even bigger.

The Needles Holiday Fun Fair 2017 will be held on Saturday, December 2nd, 2017 in Downtown Needles, California.

There will be entertainment, shopping vendors, food vendors serving hot dogs, chili dogs and baked potatoes with trimmings, games, crafts, a Christmas Tree lighting, and a lighted parade during this free and open to the public event.

** Event Schedule: Needles Holiday Fun Fair 2017: **

  • From 10:00am to 3:30pm PT: Santa Claus’ Workshop:

There will be a Santa Claus’ Workshop inside the Desert Communities Federal Credit Union, located at 1001 West Broadway, where families can visit with Santa Claus, purchase bake goods from the bake goods sale, have the kids enjoy making holiday theme crafts, and sign up for the Needles Spark of Love Toy Drive.

The Needles’ Spark of Love Toy Drive 2017 will be having a One Day Registration from 10:00am to 2:00pm PT on Saturday, December 2nd, 2017 inside the Desert Community Federal Credit Union, located at 1001 West Broadway near G Street, in Downtown Needles, California.

Parents and guardians can sign up children for new toys for the holiday season.

Parents and guardians must bring picture identification, proof of residency, and the child that will be recipients.

The Needles’ Spark of Love Toy Drive 2017 is presented by the San Bernardino County Fire Department, the Women’s Club of Needles, Desert Community Federal Credit Union, Needles Recreation Department, and Needles Community Partners.

There will also be performances by Dance Trax 51 and the Needles Senior Line Dancers during the Needles Holiday Fun Fair 2017 event.

  • At 1:00pm PT: 7th Annual Route 66 Pee Wee Derby:

The 7th Annual Route 66 Pee Wee Derby will be held in the west side parking lot area of the Desert Communities Federal Credit Union.

The entry fee for the 7th Annual Route 66 Pee Wee Derby is $20.00 and includes 1 build your own Pinewood Derby Car kit (includes paintbrushes, glue, stickers, and instructions) and a goody bag.

There will be 3 division races for racers to join; 4 years old to 6 years old, 7 years old to 9 years old, and 10 years old to 12 years old.

Medals will be awarded to 1st Place and 2nd Place in each of the division races, and all racers will receive a participation ribbon.

Only derby cars that were supplied by the Needles Recreation Center with your paid entry fee will be allowed to race in the 7th Annual Route 66 Pee Wee Derby.

Inspections of all derby cars will start before the races starting at 12:30pm PT.

All racing contestants between 4 years old and 12 years old must pre-register at the Needles Recreation Center, located at 1705 J Street, in Needles, California prior to the racing event.

  • At 4:00pm PT: Memorial Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony:

The Lightning of the Memorial Christmas Tree returns to the event and will happen on the corner of West Broadway and G Street.

City of Needles Mayor Edward T. Paget M.D. will be kicking off the Lightning of the Memorial Christmas Tree Ceremony.

Trimming of the Memorial Christmas Tree is to be conducted on Friday, December 1st, 2017.

Residents can bring memorial ornaments and such to be added at that time, or bring them to the Lightning of the Memorial Christmas Tree.

  • At 5:00pm PT: Lighted Parade:

The Lighted Parade will be held along West Broadway with decorated floats, marching bands, and Santa Claus.

Streets along the Lighted Parade will be closed before 5:00pm PT.

** Vendors Signing Ups: **

Vendors can signing up for spots during the Needles Holiday Fun Fair 2017.

Vendors will be limited to one of a kind and will be accepted on a first-come first-served basis.

Vendor’s fees cost is $25.00 for the day or $35.00 with electricity.

** Lighted Parade Signing Ups: **

There are still lots of spaces left to be in the Lighted Parade and entries will be judge in 3 categories: best floats, best decorated vehicles, and best group will be awarded for their use of lights and best display of theme.

Entries are due by 4:00pm PT on Wednesday, November 29th, 2017.

Those wanting to participate in the Lighted Parade should obtain entry forms from Mary Gonzales at the Colorado River Medical Center, located at 1401 Bailey Avenue in Needles, California, and return them to Mary Gonzales by either fax at: 1 (760) 459-2210 or send a request by email to: mgonzales@crmccares.com
