Breaking News!!: Needles, CA: Death investigation into a body floating along the Colorado River near Jack Smith Memorial Park.

According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, at approximately 4:24pm PT on Sunday, November 5th, 2017, deputies from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Colorado River Station were dispatched to a body floating in the Colorado River just south of Jack Smith Memorial Park in needles, California.

A deputy with the Marine Enforcement Unit launched a patrol boat and made contact with the reporting party, who had stayed along side the body until the deputy arrived on scene.

The deceased was recovered from the river and transported to Jack Smith Memorial Park were he was released to the coroner.

The coroner was able to identify the male subject as 46 year old Chad Russell Elkins from Fort Mohave, Arizona with the assistance of the Mohave County Sheriff’s Department.

The cause of death is currently under investigation.

The investigation is ongoing and anybody with additional information regarding this investigation is urged to contact the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Colorado River Station at: 1 (760) 326-9200.

ZachNews was alerted late Sunday evening about something spotted along the Colorado River and fire department and rescue boat activity Jack Smith Memorial Park thanks to ZachNews fans Donna Johnson and Terry Powell from Needles, California.

Donna Johnson telling ZachNews by email, “My family and I went out on the boat for the first time today. While we were out boat my son seen something floating at about 4:30. I called 911 it was a dead body.”

Terry Powell telling ZachNews by email, “My mom and sister live in the house looking into Jack Smith Park. They noticed rescue boat docked, picked up 2 people and left to go out to river, then yellow + white ambulance or ME examr truck pulled up along with fire captain truck or smaller fire truck. Flashing lights but no sirens. Rescue boat returned but by then dark and they couldn’t tell what was happening.”

A boat fire was reported at around 3:22pm PT on Sunday, March 19th, 2017 at Jack Smith Memorial Park in Needles, California.

Jociannah Elena Murillo from Needles, California sent into ZachNews video of the boat on fire along a channel near the boat launching area at Jack Smith Memorial Park.

Witnesses as well as a from the San Bernardino County Fire Department Explorer tell ZachNews Photojournalist Zachary A. Lopez that firefighters were on the other end of Jack Smith Memorial Park when they seem the smoke and rushed over to the fire.

People who were at the park, barbecuing and playing along the Colorado River all rushed over to see the boat fire.

Mark Davis II from Needles, California was with family barbecuing when he saw the boat on fire and went to find a fire extinguisher, but couldn’t find any at the information kiosk.

The boat fire caught near by vegetation near mobile home at Verde Shores Estates.

Mark Davis II jumped into the water, swim across the channel, and got onto land to alert residents at the mobile home park that there’s a fire burning near by.

Firefighters from San Bernardino County Fire Department arrived to the boat fire and began battling the fully involved boat fire, and began to call in other fire department crews from Mohave Valley Fire Department and Bullhead City Fire Department.

Witnesses as well as deputies from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department telling ZachNews Photojournalist Zachary A. Lopez that everybody on the boat got off safely.

The kick off taco dinner will be held at 5:00pm PT inside the B.P.O. Elks Lodge 1608 located at 1000 Lilyhill Drive, just south of Interstate 40 and over the D Street bridge, in Needles, California.

Come by and enjoy their always delicious tacos served up with rice, beans, and jalapeno poppers.

Taco plates are $10.00.

There will be a raffle for a wine basket during the taco dinner event.

Players will share a lunch after the golf tournament.

The United States Bureau of Land Management’s Needles Field Office will host their 2nd Annual Route 66 Public Lands Cruise across the northern east portion of the Mojave Desert in San Bernardino County, California.

The event will be held in conjunction with the 8th Annual Route 66 Hot Boat and Custom Car Show, and Golf Tournament.

The Route 66 Public Lands Cruise will start between 9:00am or 10:00am PT and will involve 7 card locations.

Participants will gather at the Historic Route 66 California Gateway Site located on Five Mile Road next to Interstate 40 in Needles, California.

The route for the Route 66 Public Lands Cruise will head west of Needles, California to Essex Road near Essex, California then heading north along historic Route 66 into Goffs, California followed by heading east back into Needles, California.

Any licensed vehicle can be used in the Route 66 Public Lands Cruise.

The Route 66 Procession, a procession of hot boats and custom cars and trucks, will be held at 4:00pm PT in the parking lot at the Needles Towne Center located at 1010 East Broadway, just off Interstate 40, in Needles, California.

Participants are being asked to line up at 3:00pm PT in the parking lot nearest to the 99 Cents Only Store at the Needles Towne Center.

The procession will rolling down historic Route 66 along East Broadway, West Broadway, Needles Highway, and River Road ending at Jack Smith Memorial Park in Needles, California.

The Route 66 Procession is motorized driving close to the posted speed limit and roads along the Route 66 Procession route will reportedly open to traffic.

But, all other motorists not participating in the Route 66 Procession should prepare for brief slow to stop traffic as the Route 66 Procession makes their way to Jack Smith Memorial Park.

Work crews for the City of Needles will be helping to make sure that the Route 66 Procession will move smoothly through intersections along the Route 66 Procession  route.

Participants are being told that nobody is to ride in trailered boats, in the back of pickups, or in other places lacking normal passenger safety considerations for licensed motor vehicles.

Following the Route 66 Procession, around 5:00pm PT, a dinner will be served up by various food vendors at Jack Smith Memorial Park located at 1001 River Road, near the Colorado River, in Needles, California.

There will be early placement of vehicles and boats for the 8th Annual Route 66 Hot Boat and Custom Car Show.

Entertainment by Dry Heat and Singer Sarah Jane Jackson-Vanderpool will be making an appearance will be performing during Friday’s event.

Day of event placement of vehicles and boats for the 8th Annual Route 66 Hot Boat and Custom Car Show will start at 7:30am PT.

The 8th Annual Route 66 Hot Boat and Custom Car Show will be open for the public at 9:00am PT.

There will be lots of hot boats, custom cars and trucks, music and entertainment, a beer garden, food vendors, t-shirt and product vendors, cackle-fest, demonstration runs of boats on the Colorado River, and much more.

The public will also get the chance to see the NASCAR #22 and get to ride inside a NASCAR simulator.

This year, there will be a Kids Zone by Set Free Church of Needles next to the playground area at Jack Smith Memorial Park.

Entertainment by Singer Sarah Jane Jackson-Vanderpool will be making an appearance during the event on Saturday, Dry Heat will be performing during Saturday’s event from 11:00am to 2:00pm PT, and D.J. Jim Russell will be Master of Ceremonies through the other portion of the event.

The main entertainment stage area will be located next to the Colorado River and all of the retail and food vendors will be surrounding all of the hot boats and custom car display area and the Beer Garden area nearest to the park area.

Players will share a lunch after the golf tournament.

2016 Needles Route 66 Event Flyer 2016 Final

The United States Bureau of Land Management’s Needles Field Office will host their 2nd Annual Route 66 Public Lands Cruise across the northern east portion of the Mojave Desert in San Bernardino County, California.

The event will be held in conjunction with the 8th Annual Route 66 Hot Boat and Custom Car Show, and Golf Tournament.

The Route 66 Public Lands Cruise will start between 9:00am or 10:00am PT and will involve 7 card locations.

Participants will gather at the Historic Route 66 California Gateway Site located on Five Mile Road next to Interstate 40 in Needles, California.

The route for the Route 66 Public Lands Cruise will head west of Needles, California to Essex Road near Essex, California then heading north along historic Route 66 into Goffs, California followed by heading east back into Needles, California.

Any licensed vehicle can be used in the Route 66 Public Lands Cruise.

The Route 66 Procession, a procession of hot boats and custom cars and trucks, will be held at 4:00pm PT in the parking lot at the Needles Towne Center located at 1010 East Broadway, just off Interstate 40, in Needles, California.

Participants are being asked to line up at 3:00pm PT in the parking lot nearest to the 99 Cents Only Store at the Needles Towne Center.

The procession will rolling down historic Route 66 along East Broadway, West Broadway, Needles Highway, and River Road ending at Jack Smith Memorial Park in Needles, California.

The Route 66 Procession is motorized driving close to the posted speed limit and roads along the Route 66 Procession route will reportedly open to traffic.

But, all other motorists not participating in the Route 66 Procession should prepare for brief slow to stop traffic as the Route 66 Procession makes their way to Jack Smith Memorial Park.

Work crews for the City of Needles will be helping to make sure that the Route 66 Procession will move smoothly through intersections along the Route 66 Procession  route.

Participants are being told that nobody is to ride in trailered boats, in the back of pickups, or in other places lacking normal passenger safety considerations for licensed motor vehicles.

Bring your running shoes and your best Santa Claus outfit to the Route 66 Santa Run being held on Saturday, December 19th, 2015 near the Colorado River at Jack Smith Memorial Park located at 1001 River Road in Needles, California.

Organizers with 2K4’R’Kids and the Topock 66 Foundation have join forces to bring the community this fun Route 66 Santa Run event which will include a 2K, 5K, and 10K Run and Walk.

** Run and Walk Times: **

– 10K starts at 8:00am PT

– 5K starts at 8:30am PT

– 2K for Adults starts at 9:00am PT

– 2K for Children starts at 9:00am PT

There will be a “Santa Land” at the event with Santa Claus, vendors, a silent action, and snow.

All proceeds from the Route 66 Santa Run provides scholarships and workforce readiness program to students throughout the Colorado River Tri-State area.

– Due to the new Route 66 Santa Run happening on Saturday, December 19th, 2015 at Jack Smith Memorial Park in Needles, California, there may be lane or road closures during the run and walk event, including along River Road.

The route may follow the same run and walk routes that the 2K4’R’Kids run and walk uses during their event, but no further information was provided to ZachNews on exactly roads this new run and walk event will take.

Just in case, motorists should be on alert for any road closures related to the new Route 66 Santa Run event, including around Jack Smith Memorial Park, along River Road, near Needles Highway at North K Street, and around Downtown Needles, California.

Motorists should also use caution when driving in that area as there will be people running and walking in the street for this new Route 66 Santa Run event.

A thunderstorm that was over Yucca, Arizona moved south into Needles, California bring thunder, some lightning mainly in the cloud, heavy rain, and small hail over Needles Middle School and Needles High School.

At around 3:30pm PT on Tuesday, October 6th, 2015, heavy rain from the thunderstorm over Yucca, Arizona began to move over the Colorado River at Jack Smith Memorial Park in Needles, California.

People were seen still fishing, swimming, and boating in the Colorado River, but began to move into their vehicles as the thunderstorm continued to move over Needles, California.

As the thunderstorm moved south passing over Needles, California, heavy rain fell over neighborhoods then into the desert and mountains where the heavy rain brought runoff from the west to flow down normally dry washes into the Needles, California area.

Just minutes after recording the news report, ZachNews Photojournalist Zachary A. Lopez spotted water runoff flowed down the dry wash from the west into the Smith Road Underpass causing the normally dry wash to become a small river.

Up the wash, more runoff water from the thunderstorm flowed down normally dry wash under Interstate 40 and over a hill making a waterfall.

West of this normally dry wash, other normally dry washes had runoff flowing down and across roadways in neighborhoods on the southwest side of Needles, California.

Clary Drive near the Needles Rodeo Grounds, Lillyhill Drive near the Needles Senior Citizens Center, and Bailey Avenue just north of Lillyhill Drive has runoff water flowing across the roadways.

The North K Street Underpass at Front Street is closed due to flooding.

Motorist had to get around the closure using Needles Highway to West Broadway as a detour.

Sandbags blocking the front doors of the A To Z Collision Center appeared to have stopped the muddy water from getting inside the building, but left a muddy and slippery mess on the sidewalk outside and along the street.

The turnoff from eastbound Needles Highway onto southbound West Broadway is closed due to flooding.

The intersection of West Broadway and J Street in Downtown Needles, California is wet and muddy from earlier runoff from the thunderstorm.
