Needles, CA: Celebrating as a community family our home during Needles High School’s Homecoming Week 2017.

Needles High School celebrated home and community family during Homecoming Week 2017 held from Monday, October 9th, 2017 to Saturday, October 14th, 2017 in Needles, California.

** Here are a few of the highlights from Needles High School’s Homecoming Week 2017: **

Students, school faculty, and parents all gathered up near the Needles Chamber of Commence for the Mustang Drive to Needles High School on Thursday, October 12th, 2017.

Cars and trucks full of Needles Mustang pride as they drove along West Broadway, up L Street, along Washington Street, and onto Park Avenue where students, school faculty, and parents cheered and waved to people along the way, spreading Needles Mustang pride as they drove along.

After the Mustang drive, students, school faculty, parents, and the community gathered inside the Needles High School gymnasium for a Community Pep Rally.

ZachNews Photojournalist Zachary A. Lopez broadcast live on Facebook the Community Pep Rally.

The Community Pep Rally kicked off with the Needles High School Band preforming the National Anthem, followed by the Needles Mustang Cheerleaders preforming to the crowd and getting the crowd all ready for all of the fun and games that were about to begin.

Games were held during the Community Pep Rally, including Around the Wagon and Ship to Shore as well as held a watermelon eating contest.

This year’s guest speaker for the Community Pep Rally was Abby Chandler; grow up in Needles, California, attended Needles High School, and graduated with the Class of 2013.

Abby Chandler spoke about Needles Mustang pride, what happen after graduation and after moving to South Dakota, and how “Home” called her back to her Needles Mustang family.

Abby Chandler began saying, “Along with all of you, I’m sure the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the words “Needles” or “Needles High School”, you think of the word “Home”.  So I began researching the definition of “Home” and came across a ton of ton of information during my short time of research, but 3 of these definitions grabbed her attending right away.”

“The first one: Home – (a noun) – the place where one lives permanently, especially as a member of a family or household. Needles was my permanent home for 18 years straight; I lived in the same house my whole life, that wasn’t what stuck with me from this definition. What struck me was “as a member of a family” part. Yes, I am a member of the Chandler family – you know the one with the crazy soft ball dad; his name is Sandy – but what was missing from this definition was that they didn’t include my Mustang family. I always known, that I was was reminded when I read this, that here in Needles, family doesn’t begin or end with your immediate family that you were related to, it only begins there. Most of my family and all of your families are here in this gym today. The people that supported me at my home games, even when I wasn’t an athlete at Needles High School anymore, The people who followed up Needles High School, my life, and my successes, through the newspaper and social media, the people that I graduated with and that taught me and coached me from my time in the Needles school system; my family extends out to my friends I started my time at my first day of kindergarten life or when I started my Mustang family late but quickly became one of us because lets be honest, do you really have a choice? My family includes the Mustangs that became before and after me that I have not yet met because we all share the same school pride. To anyone who doesn’t live here, who didn’t grow up here, or who don’t have kids of their own in the school system would think that I was out of her mind, but what those people don’t understand is that we all got the same blood. Each and every one of us bleeds blue and always will,” said Abby Chandler.

“The second definitions: Home – (a adjective) – (of a sports game) played at the team’s own field or court. For this I would like to start off by saying you’re entering this corral – the softball and baseball fields, the football field, or our golf course as the opposing team – beware. Entering our playing facilities is intimidating, it’s scary, and it is awesome. Obviously, we are all here to win, especially when Lincoln is here (Crowd cheered “Oh Ya!!” and applauded). We are all here to support athletes, but what you don’t realize until you are a washed up Needles athlete, is that this took place for fellow Mustangs to gather, reunite, and to reminisce. At these events, people from the band, the choir, the student council, alumni, teachers, city council members, school board members, business owners, current students, and people who are here just because they are just Mustang fans gather. The power of our home facilities is much greater then most of us can imagine. These home facilities have shaped me, my sister, and the many other athletes to continue their journey after we throw our (graduation) caps on that football field. Each home facility have seen blood, sweat, and tears and have created state championship teams and some of the best athletes that I have ever seen come through Needles High School. These facilities prepared us for battle and I can wait to see that hard work put into action tomorrow when Lincoln – unfortunately for them – enters Needles city limits (Crowd loudly cheered “Ya!!” and applauded),” said Abby Chandler.

“And the final definition: Home – (a verb) – (of an animal) return by instinct to its territory after leaving it. This last one hits home for me. I left for 4 years, I went haft way across the country to find a new journey; to see what life has to offer me outside of our home. I gave respect on falling in love with the new place when I left Needles. I thought staying when I graduated was what I wanted or what I needed. Living in South Dakota took me to many places around the country and even the world; I traveled, I saw the world and met many new friends, but still a piece of my heart is missing. Every time I saw my friends coming home from homecoming and home games, it make my heart broke. Every time we came to watch a basketball game and I wasn’t the one wearing the jersey, I felt out of place. When tragedy hit my little home, I was distraught that I wasn’t here supporting the Mustang family. So like an animal, I instinctively came to my territory – my home. I live by the quote “roots to grow wings to fly”; Needles gave me that. I had the confidence to grow wings because of this place – to me knowing where home will always be, but my roots brought me back. Remember Mustangs: no matter where you are, who you meet, and where you go, Needles is out home. I cannot ask for a better place to come back to and never forgetting – “Once A Mustang, Always A Mustang,”” said Abby Chandler.

The crowd cheered in applause for Abby Chandler, showing that support she stated by the great Needles Mustang family she loved and missed.

At the end of the Community Pep Rally, the whole Needles Mustang family sang the traditional Alma Mater, “All Hail to Thee,”

Afterwards, everybody rushed pass Branigan Field for the traditional Bonfire.

Firefighters with the San Bernardino County Fire Department watched over the bonfire and made sure that everybody was safe and not getting too close to the bonfire.

As morning rose on Friday, October 13th, 2017, students at Needles High School held another Pep Rally inside the Needles High School gymnasium.
