The Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 has begun on Friday, February 9th, 2018 in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

An opening ceremony was held at 3:00am PT inside PyeongChang Olympic Stadium in Gangwon Province, South Korea.

During the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018, history was made as athletes from North Korea and South Korea united together and entered PyeongChang Olympic Stadium under a unified flag.

A winter storm sweeps across Southern California on Tuesday, January 9th, 2018 causing a path of destructive and several deaths from mudslides, closed roadways due to flooding and vehicle crashes, and power outages to communities.

According to the California highway Patrol, U.S. 101 has been reopened in Santa Barbara, California.

Please drive safely and be mindful that some off-ramps and surface streets may remain closed.

 

**** Victims of the Destructive and Deadly Winter Storm: ****

Authorities have release the names of the victims in the deadly mudslide in Montecito, California.

According to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office, as of Saturday, January 20th, 2018, 21 people have been confirmed dead.

in a release statement, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office said, “The Sheriff’s Office wants to express our heartfelt sadness to the family and friends of those who lost their loved ones. We request that you respect their privacy during this most difficult time.”

Faviola Benitez Calderon’s 10 year old son, Jonathan Benitez and his cousin 3 year old Kailly Benitez, as well as Kailly’s mother, 27 year old Marilyn Ramos, were also killed.

Pinit Sutthithepa immigrated from Thailand, for years sending back money to his wife and two young children until he could bring them to the United States.

  • 61 year old Rebecca Riskin from Montecito, California

Rebecca Riskin, a real estate agent and founder of Riskin Partners, was killed in the mudslides.

Riskin’s body was found Wednesday near a highway.

Riskin Partners confirmed her death and described Rebecca Riskin as “an exceptional woman” who lived her life with “strength, grace and elegance.”

Riskin Partners wrote on the company’s Facebook page, “It is with heavy hearts we share that our dear friend and partner, Rebecca Riskin, has passed away as a result of the tragic flooding and mudslides in Montecito. The confirmation of her loss is incredibly devastating to her friends, family, and our community. Per her wishes, we intend to carry out her life’s work with the same strength, grace and elegance that wholly defined Rebecca. Rebecca was an exceptional woman, and her legacy will continue to live on and thrive through her children, Robert and Julia, her husband Ken Grand, and her namesake firm, Riskin Partners. At this time, Rebecca’s family requests privacy as they mourn her loss and celebrate her remarkable life. We too are still processing her passing and appreciate all of your kind messages and concerns. Details on a service and memorial to follow. Dina Landi, Sarah Hanacek, Jasmine Tennis, Robert Riskin, Erin Lammers, and Jenna Crawford.”

Riskin was a ballerina with the American Ballet Theater in New York, New York before an injury cut short her dancing career.

Riskin returned to her hometown of Los Angeles, California in 1979, where she began selling high-end real estate on the city’s west side.

She moved to Montecito, California in the early 1990s.

Riskin is survived by her husband, 2 grown children and a grandson.

Josephine “Josie” Gower is described by friends as warm and loving and as never speaking negatively about anyone.

Josephine “Josie” Gower loved to travel and would always stop to give cookies or other treats to people at the YMCA,.

  • 73 year old Peter Fleurat from Montecito, California

NBC affiliate KSBY Channel 6 reports Peter Fleurat’s body was carried from his home on Hot Springs Road to Olive Mill Road where it was recovered by emergency workers.

Family and friends of Peter Fleurat were notified of his death Wednesday evening.

Juli Miller, friend of Peter Fleurat, wrote on Facebook, “With a very heavy heart, our kind, creative friend with an unforgettable laugh has left us. Thank you all for sharing and especially to Cynthia for finding the most recent information for us. Hug your loved ones and stay in contact with people you adore. You never know when it will be too late. Searching for a friend from Montecito currently listed as missing. Peter Fleurat. He was in his house on Hot Springs when the mudslide knocked it off the foundation. His partner was pulled from the mud and woke in the hospital.

Peter Fleurat’s partner Ralph Barajas’ is the owner of Rose Cafe restaurant in Santa Barbara, California.

The restaurant wrote on Facebook, “It is with a heavy heart that we must inform you that our dear friend, Peter Fleurat, lost his life in the Montecito mudslide. He and our owner, Ralph “Lalo” Barajas, were trying to get to safety when their home was swept away with them in it, causing them to be separated. We had been searching for Peter since this happened Tuesday morning and received the tragic news yesterday evening. We are beyond grateful that Lalo was rescued and is safe with family, but now not only is he dealing with the loss of his home, but with the loss of his partner. Please understand that he needs time to grieve and needs our love and support during this difficult time. Thank you for checking in with us over the past couple of days. We appreciate all of your thoughts and prayers.

Peter Fleurat had been a resident of Montecito, California since the 1970s, after moving from his childhood home in upstate New York.

Peter Fleurat studied nursing at Santa Barbara City College and worked as an end-of-life caretaker.

Alice Mitchell (Pictured Second From Right) stayed home to celebrate her husband’s 89th birthday on the night of the winter storm, the couple’s daughter tells KNBC 4 News.

The house on Hot Springs Road was washed away by raging floods.

Mitchell’s body was found down the road, on a different street.

Rohter founded Saint Augustine Academy in Ventura, California in 1994 and was described as a man dedicated to his Catholic faith and to helping others.

The mudslide swept Rohter and his wife Theresa Rohter out of their home.

Theresa was rescued and hospitalized in stable condition.

Rohter grew up in Chicago, Illinois and was a real estate broker for several years before founding St. Augustine Academy.

The California Highway Patrol has closed both directions of U.S. Highway 101 from State Route 126 in Ventura, California to Milpas Street in Santa Barbara, California.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the California Highway Patrol said the closures of U.S. Highway 101 could last at least 48 hours or more.

Caltrans crews are working to clear slides on State Route 33.

United States Coast Guard rescued a family of five, including a newborn baby, after their house was overtaken by a mudslide.

According to the Ventura County Aviation Unit, the victim was hoisted and flown to awaiting ground personnel.

A t least 2 lanes of Interstate 405 was closed in the Sepulveda Pass due to a rockslide.

A man and his dog was rescued from the Los Angeles River in the Sepulveda Basin near Sherman Oaks, California by swift water rescue crews in a helicopter.

Flooding forced passengers out of Terminal 2 at Los Angeles International Airport in Los Angeles, California.

Several crashes were reported around the region due to wet and flooded roadways.

A 53 year old big rig truck driver was killed along Interstate 5 near Griffith Park after slamming into a concrete barrier and bridge pillar.

The crash blocked all northbound lanes of Interstate 5.

Details about what led to the crash in northbound lanes were not immediately available, but heavy downpours were reported in the area.

The winter storm dumped snow onto the mountains in Big Bear, California.

Motorists heading up the mountain to enjoy the snow were told they must use chains.

As of 3:30am PT Wednesday, Caltrans District 8 said chain controls are lifted in areas, but Caltrans crews are still working in the area to make sure the roadways remain safe for motorists.

According to Caltrans District 8, State Route 138 was closed from Interstate 15 to Summit Valley Road due to mud on the roadway.

Cajon Boulevard from Kenwood Ave and Cleghorn Road was closed in the Cajon Pass due to mudslide.

A power outage, fire, flooding, and patrol vehicle crash occurred in Needles, California as the winter storm left Southern California.

At least 2 transformers on top of a utility pole snapped off and caught on fire along the 100 block of Erin Drive.

The North K Street Underpass near Downtown Needles, California was closed due to flooding.

At least 2 officers from the California Highway Patrol were injured in a crash along Interstate 40 at mile marker 141 in Needles, California.

Needles City Council Member Lewis Evans said that 2 officers suffered minor abrasions and were transported to a hospital in Lake Havasu City, Arizona.

The cause of the crash is unknown, but the roadway was wet from the passing winter storm.

Yucca, AZ: Single lane of traffic in both directions on Interstate 40 due to construction.

As you head on out to get your New Year 2017 Weekend started, a reminder to all motorists driving along Interstate 40 in the Yucca, Arizona area.

Due to construction work being done on the roadway, Interstate 40 in Yucca, Arizona, west from mile post 11.0, 1.0 miles east from Arizona State Route 95 to mile post 15.0, 5.0 miles east of Arizona State Route 95, is reduced to a single lane of traffic in both directions.

The eastbound Interstate 40 exit onto Franconia Road is closed as well as the on-ramp to eastbound Interstate 40 from Franconia Road is also closed.

The westbound Interstate 40 exit to Franconia Road is open as well as the on-ramp to westbound Interstate 40 from Franconia Road is also open.

Duration of the construction project is from 7:00am MST on Monday, September 12th, 2016 to 6:59am MST on Tuesday, Janaury 31st, 2017.

Temporary concrete barrier are being placed for road construction.

Speed reduced in the construction zone will be 45 mph and restrictions width is 16 ft.
